A tugboat with 25 men aboard sunk in the Yangtze River on Thursday January 15, resulting in 22 fatalities, local authorities have confirmed.

Among the dead, were eight foreigners from Singapore, India, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. According to Wang Zhenkai, one of the surviving three, the boat suddenly turned on its side after a load test of the main engine.

Initial investigations by authorities have said that the boat sank from ‘improper handling’. The boat’s operators apparently didn’t follow the correct procedures for trial operations and also failed to inform the authorities of the boat’s condition.
