19 Foreigners Arrested in Shanghai for Shoplifting
Jun 27, 2013 By eChinacities.com

According to the Huangpu Public Security Bureau, police have rounded up two shoplifting groups made up of 19 foreigners. The groups reportedly stole over 1,500 clothing items worth a total of around 300,000 RMB from establishments such as Zara, Uniqlo, H&M, Forever 21, and Pull & Bear.

12 of the foreigners were caught on May 19, while the other seven were detained on May 23. Reportedly, all of the shoplifters are from South East Asian countries and entered the country on tourist visas via Pudong International Airport. The female members of the shoplifting team would apparently split into two groups upon entering the clothes stores, with the first group attempting to distract the attention of the clerks while the others stuffed clothes into special security alarm-proof bags. The stolen goods were then given to the male assailants who would wait outside surveying the scene.

When the goods were stolen, the shoplifters would transport the clothes back to their home countries for selling. Currently, police are investigating the case further.

I love the all-encompassing "foreigner" tag. Like we're all the same. At least honest journalists will say the country the shoplifters are from, without using flamebait weasel words like "foreigner."

@kikr, I'm sorry but what on earth is wrong with coming to China as a result of the economic crisis? I came here initially as a result of being laid-off from my government job back in 2008 because voters didn't approve of the budget. I've decided to stay because I started a family, but I could go back now that the tide has changed for the better. That is more of a legitimate reason than what Mr. Knox is reporting. His response sounds like an excuse to cater to his sexual escapades. 'Passion for adventure' really means skipping down to Thailand in between semesters to play with children. The point is, at least you know I'm not a pervert.
