13 Foreigners Employed to Perform in Guiyang, Made to Sleep in Bar

13 Foreigners Employed to Perform in Guiyang, Made to Sleep in Bar
Jan 07, 2014 By eChinacities.com

For those of you, who have done modeling gigs in China this may sound all too familiar. Your agent says they have a great job for you, easy money, not long hours, all you have to do is perform in a bar in Guiyang.

This was the beginning of the story for these 13 foreign performers, all stemming from Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania. But sadly for them, the deal ended up not being so great. Arriving on Christmas day they then performed in and had to live in the bar for six days straight. On the seventh day the police showed up, asking for documents.

At first, the performers refused to show the police their passports or any other documentation, but later relented when the police called for reinforcements. All 13 were found to be in violation of the Immigration Control Act and they, along with the owner of the bar, were fined accordingly.

Just remember, if you get sent on a job to a different city by your modeling agent and a hotel isn’t provided, the job is definitely shady and sometimes the police roll on up.

Also if the agent doesnt disclose the salary then the more reason to be skeptical.Verbal agreements are great over the phone or over a beer but when police shows there's no one to prove that agreement.

there is, literally, NO legal way whatsoever for any foreigner to work as an employed model in china. even if your agency succeeds in securing a work permit, as the nature of the job itself revolves around varying "places of work" and/or performance, this is in violation of the interpretation that a work permit is issued to a (read: ONE) direct "work unit" legal-wise, to work as a model in china at this point in time, you are fucked WITH OR WITHOUT a generic work permit. what needs to be created is a "performer" license for foreigners, where the particularities surrounding work places and places of performance become legalized.
