11 Officials Punished Over Bund New Year Tragedy

Four officials have been sacked and seven have been demoted over the Bund Stampede on New Year’s Eve 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 36 people.

Zhou Wei, Party Chief of Huangpu District, and Pengsong his deputy were both removed from their posts alongside Huangpu Public Security Chief Zhou Zheng, and Deputy Police Chief Chen Qi.

Seven other officials working in areas such as tourism, public security and urban management were also punished, according to a press conference on the tragedy held this morning.

According to an investigation of the incident, the security at the event was inadequate and the event was poorly managed.

Zhou Bo, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy, saying: “The tragedy should never have happened and could have been prevented”.
