Nine members of the arrested foreign tour group in Inner Mongolia are still under criminal detention in China, while the remaining 11 were deported. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the BBC today that those arrested are “suspected of crimes,” by local police.

South African faith based charity Gift of the Givers confirmed the nationalities of those arrested: 10 South Africans, nine Britons, and one Indian. The group had planned a 47 day tour of ancient China. The 20 tourists were arrested on the morning of July 10 at Ordos Aiport in Inner Mongolia. Chinese police accused the tourists of watching videos from a terrorist organization in their hotel room and having links to a terrorist organization.

The British Embassy in China and the U.K.'s Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Office told The Global Times today that, “nine British citizens and two men with dual British and South African citizenship were arrested in northern China. Six have been released, and the others remain in custody.”

Perhaps someone should have given thought to the fact that it's the middle of tourist season. I wonder how many times foreign travel agents will hear "We saw where you can be arrested just for watching a foreign TV documentary in China. We're cancelling our trip".

Gift of the Givers is a Muslim charity group. They are charitable but strongly religious. I'm guessing it's the religion part of the equation that is the problem.
