100,000 Kilograms of Dead Fish on Wuhan’s Rivers

With the dead pig scandal on Shanghai’s Huangpu River still fresh in our memories, the latest incident of dead fish floating on a river in Wuhan is another stark reminder of the serious pollution problems faced by China.

About 100,000 kg (220,000lb) of dead fish on the Fu River in Wuhan were swooped up by Chinese authorities on September 4. Environmentalists claim that ammonia from a chemical plant owned by the Hubei Shuanghuan Science and Technology Company caused the poisoning. Authorities warned the public to not eat the dead fish but claimed that the drinking water was not affected.
