Living in Guangzhou, it’s easy to forget about things like the Fall’s primetime line-up back home, what date the Academy Awards fall on this year, or who’s at the top of the Top 40 with Casey Kasem. To keep your wits in shape and your pop culture “muscle” strong while living here, why not try one of the trivia nights held around Guangzhou. Hosted by and catering to expats, a few hours at a Pub Quiz can be the perfect way to forget about your crowded early morning subway commute, or the ringing of Cantonese in your ears. Plus, thinking and drinking at the same time is always fun.

1) The Tavern Sports BarView In Map
Trivia at The Tavern Sports Bar is held every Wednesday night in their downstairs area. Attendance at this trivia event is pretty solid, with many of the same teams showing up each week. Because the same 5-10 teams show up each week, it can sometimes be a bit crowded, so be sure to get there a bit early to ensure that your team has a place to sit down. Although the listed start time for The Tavern’s trivia night is 19:30, it actually starts around 20:30.  Groups of up to six can compete, and the questions are displayed via PowerPoint on a projected screen. Trivia is hosted by Kamille and Beth, who rotate hosting and question writing duties each week. Expect a solid amount of pop culture, general knowledge and sports questions, with lots of bonus points thrown into the mix to make things interesting. The winning team gets a bottle of liquor, the second-place team gets a bottle of wine (or 2 pitchers of Tiger beer) and the third-place team gets a pitcher of Tiger beer.

2) The BrewView In Map
Trivia at The Brew in New Town is held every Thursday night at 20:30, giving you plenty of time to grab one of their famous burgers before hand (or during). The questions are shown on TV screens throughout the bar, making it easy to settle in anywhere you feel comfortable. Space at The Brew is always airy and open, and the food is hard to pass up. Led by Canadian guys, questions are split into categories dealing with movies, “the nineties”, animals, phobias etc., with an occasional hockey question thrown into the mix just for fun. Overall, the rounds are comprised of a very well rounded set of trivia questions that will definitely have you digging deep into your brain. What’s more, special offers are made in between rounds – sometimes its happy hour priced drinks, or a free plate of nachos or buffalo wings for a randomly selected team. The winning team gets a 300 RMB Beer Card, the second-place team gets a 200 RMB Beer Card and the third-place team gets a 100 RMB Beer Card. Beer Cards are redeemable at The Brew’s self-pour taps.

3) Hooley’s Irish PubView In Map
Hooley’s started the city’s first trivia night over three years ago, and still holds Trivia night on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Teams of up to five can compete, although the bar is relatively relaxed if an extra friend or two want to join in on the fun. Teams start signing up at 19:30, and the question rounds beginning at 20:00. An array of international hosts rotate on a regular basis, and are often trivia regulars themselves who know Hooley’s trivia style.  Questions are shown on the big screen and on flat screens throughout the bar, making it easy to play from any seat in the house.  The winning team gets a bottle of whiskey, the second-place team gets a bottle of wine and the third-place team gets a metre (five pints) of beer.

Hooley’s closed in early December for a strategic move to New Town. Hooley’s plans to re-open at the new location at the end of December with a soft opening period throughout the month of January. Expect the oldest trivia night in town to recommence after Chinese New Year.
