Guangzhou Watchdog: A Round-up of News, Events & New Openings

With new buildings and roads virtually appearing overnight in China, it’s all too easy to fall out of the loop when it comes to news, events and top local stories. We’ve taken the time to search the web for the latest updates on what’s happening around Guangzhou.

 

1) American Momix ReMIX Dance Company to Perform in Guangzhou in AprilView In Map
Moses Pendleton, an American choreographer, dancer and artistic director of the dance company MOMIX, brings his performance “Momix ReMIX” to the Guangzhou stage this April. The performance combines elements of modern ballet, thunderous music, lycra outfits, dramatic lighting and stage props as random as hula hoops and exercise balls. Described as a “ballet and circus rolled into one”, the show will be staged for three consecutive nights at Guangzhou Opera House from March 31st to April 2nd.

2) AIDS is biggest killer of infectious diseases in Guangdong
On February 15th, the Guangdong Hygiene Department announced statistics about the situation of infectious diseases in Guangdong Province from last year and this January, 2011. According to the statement, there were a total of 669,741 cases of infectious diseases in the province last year, of which 1137 of the patients died. These figures show a 45.35% increase in diseases, and a 1.8% increase in death rates. What’s also noteworthy about these statistics is that AIDS has been the number one killer in infectious disease cases in the province for 11 consecutive months.

3) Guangzhou’s house rental prices are going up, up, up!
The housing situation is looking bleak for those renting property in Guangzhou. Renting prices are expected to rise by 20% in the city in the coming months. Read more here.

4) Cambodian Psychedelic Rock Band Performing at C:Union on March 10
Have you ever heard rock music from Cambodia? If not, then March 10th is your chance to change all that! The Cambodian Space Project are a psychedelic rock band from Phnom Penh who revive rare musical gems from Cambodia’s Golden Age in the 1960’s and 70’s, sprucing them up with a new, contemporary sound. 5) Guangzhou’s 63 Storey Skyscraper Hotel Re-opens this February
A part of Guangzhou’s first skyscraper hotel, the Guangdong International Building, is reopening at the end of the month. On December 30, 2008, the hotel announced that it would temporarily be stopping business to undergo major renovations. However, the 63-storey hotel is about to re-open at the end of the month and has already started taking bookings for dates after February 28th. The 200.18 metre tall building first opened in 1992, and was the tallest reinforced steel skyscraper in China in the 90’s.
