Back to School: Guide to Foreign Universities with Programs in China

Looking for a career change? Seeking professional development? With college application season in full swing, now's the time for all you prospective students out there to be researching programs to find something that suits you. As Chinese universities continue to climb up the global rankings and their partnerships with world-renowned institutions of higher education constantly expand, perhaps studying in China is the right path for you.  Below is a list of various Chinese/foreign university collaborations and the degree programs they offer. If you're interested in China and in the market to study, these programs are definitely worth consideration.

Dual Degree Programs

1) John Hopkins  – Nanjing University
John Hopkins joined forces with Nanjing University in 1986 to develop the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, offering a Master of Arts degree in International Studies. Today, there are four available concentrations students can choose from: International Economics, International Politics, International and Comparative Law, or Chinese Studies. The Hopkins-Nanjing Center integrates academic and residential environments to provide students the opportunity to candidly discuss critical political, economic and sociological issues facing China and the world today. Extra-curricular programs are available to create a unique learning experience outside of the classroom; these include student interest groups, research opportunities, lectures, and mini courses. The Master's degree program is fully-accredited in both China and the United States. Students complete course work and a thesis in Chinese, culminating in a degree jointly awarded by John Hopkins and Nanjing University.

Degrees available: Master of Arts in International Studies
Language: Advanced level of Chinese language proficiency is required
Length of program: Two years
Cost of program: $37,345 USD for the 2012-2013 academic year
Application deadline: February 1
Scholarships/fellowships: John Hopkins fellowships and grants are awarded only to full-time students on the basis of both academic promise and demonstrated financial need

2) London School of Economics – Peking University
This dual degree program organized by the London School of Economics and Peking University has a unique split location structure allowing students to experience a full academic program in both China and the UK. The program combines an empirical and theoretical approach to contemporary international affairs and culminates in a Master of Science degree in International Affairs. Coursework focuses on the international relations of China and the Asia Pacific region as well as the theory and history of global international relations. Students study in small seminar groups of no more than 15 students and are afforded opportunities to engage in advanced-level academic research. 

Degrees available: Master of Science in International Affairs
Language: Courses in London will be taught in English; courses in Beijing will be taught in Chinese or English (based on individual student preference)
Length of program: Two years (Students will spend the first year at PKU and the second year at the LSE)
Cost of program: Year 1 at PKU: 95,000 RMB; Year 2 at LSE: £17,184
Application deadline: March 22, 2013
Scholarships/fellowships: Applicants will automatically be considered for all London School of Economics aid for which they are eligible

3) Tsinghua University – MIT Sloan School of Management
Tsinghua University and MIT Sloan School of Management have partnered in 1997 to offer an International MBA program. Candidates for this program are selected from first year Tsinghua IMBA students and spend their second year of study at MIT. The program coursework consists of the following modules: Soft skills, analytical foundations, management fundamentals, China and the world, and integrative practice. Students will have the opportunity apply their MBA education in a real-world business environment through completion of a capstone project. The International MBA program is designed to cultivate future leaders with general management capabilities. Students will gain a global perspective and China expertise to prepare themselves for a career with a culturally diverse organization.

Application deadline: Tsinghua application deadline is March 25, 2013
Scholarships/fellowships: All MBA students are eligible to apply for several kinds of merit-based fellowships and awards. These scholarships and fellowships are offered by Tsinghua University, Chinese government or other donors to help international students cover the cost of study
Degree issuing school: An MBA degree is granted by Tsinghua University and an MS in Management Studies is granted by MIT.

4) Rutgers Business School – Central University of Finance and Economics (Shanghai and Beijing)
Rutgers Business School has two campuses located in Shanghai and Beijing. The Shanghai campus offers an Executive Development Program along with an Executive MBA program. The Beijing campus offers an Executive MBA program in collaboration with the Central University of Finance and Economics. The Executive MBA program examines business from formation to transformation with coursework in economics, accounting, finance, law, business strategy and technology. Students will develop and refine skills essential to successful decision-making and management in a global business setting. The Rutgers Executive MBA is a highly-ranked program with relevant, up-to-date curriculum and world-class faculty.

5) Monash University – Southeast University
Monash University is the first Australian university to receive a license to operate in China. The university collaborates with Southeast University (SEU) in Suzhou to run the Joint Graduate School for Graduate Education and the Joint Research Institute. The school is located in Suzhou Industrial Park, home to more than 100 Fortune 500 companies and 15 international universities and research institutes. Master's programs are offered in the following areas: Information technology, business, science, engineering, health, humanities and design. The unique partnership combines SEU's educational strengths with Australia's academic methods and training models to produce professionals across a variety of disciplines.

International MBA Programs

1) MIT Sloan School of Management – Fudan University
The Fudan International MBA Program was launched in 1996 through collaboration between Fudan University School of Management and MIT Sloan School of Management. This program, taught entirely in English, aims to develop professionals with an international perspective and entrepreneurial spirit. The International MBA coursework covers a variety of subjects including: Management, marketing, leadership, economics, globalization, accounting and communications. Students are offered unique opportunities to collaborate with other leading universities and participate in extra-curricular activities and learning programs. The IMBA program is lead by an international faculty providing a unique combination of international and Chinese academics.

2) University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business – Shanghai Jiao Tong University
The University of British Columbia International MBA program is taught in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. This unique program features a world-class UBC faculty, an award-winning curriculum recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and two weeks of study in Vancouver, Canada. Students are able to combine work experience with study to prepare themselves for success in today's highly competitive global economy. The International MBA program focuses on essential business knowledge along with practical management skills for effective motivation, innovation, and leadership. Candidates are required to have at least two years of work experience, although most students in the program have five to seven years of experience.

Foreign Universities with Campuses in China

1) NYU Shanghai
Situated on the campus of East China Normal University (ECNU), NYU Shanghai offers a variety of courses taught by both NYU faculty and members of the ECNU faculty. Students can choose from a variety of undergraduate and graduate professional programs of study. The curriculum appeals to a broad range of academic interests and includes majors in the areas of humanities, Chinese studies, science, engineering, mathematics, technology, business, and economics. Additionally, NYU Shanghai currently offers two graduate programs in business analytics and interactive telecommunications, with additional programs under active consideration. NYU Shanghai is a place for students to study and address global issues while benefiting from the strengths of both the U.S. liberal arts education system and China's rich history of educational excellence.
