Another week, another look at some of China’s most incongruous happenings. Among others, we’ve got vigilantes, girls with ant problems and the Arsenal football team trying to speak Mandarin.

The Strange

1) Vigilante Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands

Bauhinia Lady, a Hong Kong resident reported to be in her thirties, is bringing the fight to social injustice by using her 6,000 HKD tax rebates to distribute money and instant noodles to the needy.

After doling her gifts to members of housing estate in the Jordan district of Hong Kong, the self-proclaimed camera-shy vigilante called upon others to join her struggle by donating their tax rebates to the poor, in a concerted effort to fight the government’s appalling treatment of low-earning citizens.

Little else is known of this elusive character. Rumors abound of her being widely traveled, or of being relatively well off; both essential traits for other known vigilantes. Should your path cross that of Bauhinia Lady, caution is advised; it’s not everyday you get to meet a real masked crusader.

2) Girl with Ant Colony in her Ears

A 16 year old in Taiwan was taken to the doctor after her ears suddenly started itching, and was found to have 30 ants in her ears; six in her left ear and over 20 in her right ear.

An anonymous source explained the girl had the peculiar habit of cleaning her ears and eating snacks while lying down on her bed, with crumbs falling between the folds of the bed sheets.

Though her ear canals had swelled over the past months, her eardrums were not damaged by the ants. No doubt they already had a lot on their plate.

3) New School on how to Seduce Billionaires

From serving tea, to makeup, to conversation, a school in Beijing offers women the tips and tricks on how to make a rich man fall in love - for as little as $46 an hour. Click here for the video.

4) Relationship Problems? Just Take Your Loved One Hostage

Drama unfurled at the Chenggong campus of Yunnan Radio & Television University as a couple’s relationship troubles turned into a hostage situation.

Li Jing in Kunming took things to the extreme at the end of last week when he decided to hold Guo hostage at knifepoint, while calling for Xiao Cong, a news host, to act as the negotiator. According to reports, Cong arrived at the sixth-floor dorm room and was told by Li he wanted his relationship misfortunes to be broadcast on the news as a warning to others.

He went on to threaten the hostage by rhetorically asking Cong how long he thought it would take for a person to bleed to death.

After over two hours of luckless coaxing, SWAT forces intervened by breaking in the room through the window and taking Li into custody. The hostage was unharmed.

5) Prisoners forced into online gold-farming

According to a former labor-camp prisoner in Jixi, a 56 year old man named Liu interviewed by The Guardian, prisoners are being used to farm gold for up to 12 hours a day.

For the uninitiated, gold-farming refers to the practice of accumulating online wealth in video games in order to sell it in bulk to players for real money.

In addition to their manual labour, they were forced by prison bosses to farm for gold, each of them being given a quota to reach by the end of the day, which, if not met, lead to physical punishment and abuse.

Liu went on to state the guards could make up to 6,000 RMB off selling this virtual currency.

6) Arsenal and Real Madrid Coming to China – Hear Them Speak Chinese

Chinese football fans will be happy this summer, as Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid have opted for a pre-season Chinese tour.

Guangzhou and Tianjin will be welcoming Real Madrid and Liverpool while Arsenal will head towards Yiwu, not far from Shanghai.

In order to build up anticipation for their arrival, they even prepared small videos for their Chinese fans, with many players attempting to speak in Mandarin. Take a look here to witness their valiant efforts.
