A 25 year old woman in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl via caesarian section. However, during the operation doctors noticed a strange, long, dark object in a ligament on the right side of her uterus.
At first, doctors thought it was an intrauterine device (IUD) but closer inspection revealed that it was in fact a 4cm long embroidery needle that had turned a rusty, dark brown. When quizzed by doctors, Fangfang revealed that she swallowed an embroidery needle when she was five years old. Despite telling her mother, she wasn’t taken to hospital because she didn’t show any abnormal side effects and so never gave the incident a second thought– until now.
After successfully removing the needle from her uterus, doctors said that the most likely explanation is that after being swallowed, the needle travelled from her stomach into her intestine and from there entered the abdomen. It then eventually got lodged in a gap near the uterus where it stayed undetected for the next 20 years. Luckily it never entered the actual uterus so Fangfang was able to conceive and give birth to a healthy baby.
