What’s that Smell? Workers in a Sichuan Office Wear Gas Masks to Work
Nov 07, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Wearing facemasks in China is pretty common, but most people do so to protect themselves from air pollution or the cold. A group of office workers in Nanchong, Sichuan were recently photographed wearing gas masks for a whole other reason: there was a very funny smell in their workplace.

The foul smell seems to be emitted from the elevator in the Taihe Shangdu Compound and it’s so bad that it irritates the eyes, throat and chest of anyone who comes into contact with it. According to the building’s management office, the fumes are attributed to a construction project in the basement floor and the strange smell is formaldehyde.

In response to this obvious health risk, one very smart boss in the building decided to buy futuristic-looking gas masks for the more “sensitive” employees in the group.

Now if only bosses in polluted cities like Beijing would do the same!
