On November 7, 2013, at the Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, 41 year-old English photographer David Jenkins documented a "Great Escape" – a "Great Panda Escape", that is!
A little panda cub tired of being told it's so cute, and perhaps feeling deprived of its liberty, tried to escape the jail…we mean enclosure. Having acknowledged that short stubby legs might be problematic the panda cub found itself an accomplice.
And so there they were reaching for the steel bars, freedom whipping through their fur. But then it quickly became clear that they had really only planned stage one of the “great escape”. Once reaching the steel bars for a moment, this portly "jail bird" ended his flirtation with freedom by giving in to the eventuality of gravity, and fell down onto the ground with his legs sticking straight up in the air. And the “co-conspirator”? Well for all his trouble, he takes the fall – literally!
Though the “jailbreak” remained unsuccessful, both pandas were able to escape any injury.
The cute, cuddly antics of these pandas can continued to be enjoyed at the Bifengxia Panda Base.
