Suzhou Hospital Gives Pregnant Woman Oral Contraceptive Pill By Mistake

A hospital in Suzhou accidentally gave a pregnant woman the oral contraceptive pill rather than a hormone pill meant to help prevent miscarriages.

Mrs Chen is a 32 year old woman, who has been married for four years and already has one child. The couple were thrilled when they found out she was pregnant again. They quickly booked themselves an appointment at the Suzhou city hospital. After a checkup they were told that Mrs. Chen was about 6 weeks pregnant, and that her progesterone levels were low, so the doctor prescribed her medicine aimed at boosting her progesterone levels.

Mrs Chen and her husband went home and she started taking the pills. Four days later Mrs. Chen started feeling nauseous and exhausted. Her husband took a closer look at the box and realized she had been given ‘Fukang’, an oral contraceptive.

The hospital and the doctor involved in her case has admitted to the error, but have told Mrs. Chen that she should now terminate the pregnancy.

As it stands the hospital have said they will conduct the termination free of charge and pay the couple 26,600 RMB in compensation.

The family have said that if they are not pregnant again within the year they believe the hospital should be liable for the cost of in vitro fertilization. The hospital has yet to comment.
