CCTV News reported yesterday afternoon that a primary school in Gansu was hit by a sudden small tornado. A pupil was carried several meters by the tornado and suffered a slight head injury.

The meteorological department clarified that the tornado was actually a dust devil. A dust devil is a strong revolving column of dust that can pick up sand and small light objects. Dust devils form under clear weather conditions when hot air near the surface rises quickly through a pocket of cool air above it.
