Neighbours’ Rubbish Blamed for Toddler’s Deadly Fall

Neighbours’ Rubbish Blamed for Toddler’s Deadly Fall

Neighbours who left a pile of recycling beneath a 10th floor corridor window have been ordered to compensate the family of a toddler who fell out of a window after climbing on top of it- despite the fact that the 2 year old was left alone in an unlocked apartment.

The two neighbours were ordered to pay 35,000 RMB each to the family of the child after the child’s parents claimed that they were partially responsible for the accident as they had allowed their empty bottles and cardboard boxes to accumulate.

The incident occurred almost 2 years ago on October 17 2012; the toddler’s mother, surnamed Fan, left the child on his own to go and meet her husband at the gate of their community.

When they returned, they found their son on the ground, outside their apartment block, unconscious. He died a few hours later. Police found the toddler’s footprints on the windowsill during investigations.

The court ruled that although the child’s parents were mostly responsible, the neighbours and the property management were partly to blame, as they had allowed the rubbish to pile up.

I feel sorry for the kid that just wanted to play. Couldn't she have just taken him with her to the gate to meet her husband? Why would the apartment be unlocked? Sure the neighbours should have tossed out their junk but I think they are really not responsible for the children's death. Ridiculous.
