A snapshot of Hu's microblog page

On February 21st, a special name had appeared on the microblog of People.com.cn (People's Daily online) – Hu Jintao, Chairman Hu. Profile to the owner of the microbog page reads “General Secretary of the CPC (Communist Party of China), Chairman of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission”. News spread quickly on the internet, and by 10:50 on the morning of February 22nd, the microblog account had already attracted around 13,809 followers.

According to a staff member of the People's Daily online, President Hu had registered an account in the forum of People.com.cn when he had visited their headquarters back in 2008 and had used the registered name “Hu Jintao” to chat with netizens then. The microblog page is automatically generated by their server using that same ID.

Till this morning (February 22nd), there were no updates yet on the page. The profile to the right reads out titles currently held by Hu and there was a red “人” (Chinese character for people) and “checked and confirmed by the people” in Chinese written in the profile information section to the right. According to People's Daily online, “checked and confirmed by the people” is a way for them to distinguish and confirm identity of public figures, government institutions, and well-known companies and organizations registered with their server.

A microblog or “微博wei bo” in Chinese is a blogging platform with post entries consisting of 140 or less Chinese characters.
