The National Tourism Administration recent published the results of their first National Tourist Satisfaction Survey, conducted in 40 selected Chinese cities. Overall tourist satisfaction was found to be 79 out of 100 and Hangzhou received the country’s highest ranking.

West Lake, Hangzhou

The administration collected around 7000 questionnaires, polled for tourist comments and feedbacks on 9 of the biggest travel websites in the country, and scoured local and municipal travel agencies and administrative bureaus for tourist suggestions and complaints. Several factors were judged, including attraction upkeep, transportation convenience, entertainment and social events, dining and accommodation options, and the service of local travel agencies.

Poll results showed that tourists were most satisfied with their experiences in Hangzhou, Wuxi, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenyang, Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, with each city averaging over 80 index points. Hangzhou ranked at the top of the list, enjoying a good reputation and support from tourists around the country.

Tourists were most pleased by the quality of service at Hangzhou’s attractions and on sightseeing tours. Specifically, they were won over by Hangzhou's offer of free admission for visits to West Lake and the administrative act of giving priority to those visiting from outside the city when accessing the West Lake during peak travel times (the Golden Travel Weeks in May and October).
