On July 22, the 57 retiree Shen Ailan from Huangshi in Hubei province and some friends went out to eat together. During the meal, they drank nearly half a litre of Baijiu. After the meal, her friends went home, but Mrs Shen-presumably rather buzzed-fancied a dip and so went swimming in Zhongyao Jiangtan River.

Shortly after getting into the water, she felt dizzy and lost consciousness; when she woke up, it was to discover that 10 hours had passed and she had floated 75 kilometers down the Yangtze River. When she reached Jiujiang in Jiangxi province, she spotted a vessel and screamed for help.

However, this wasn’t the end of her ordeal; the vessel threw out a flotation device to her, but didn’t pull her out of the water. Mrs Shen attempted to swim ashore with the aid of the rubber ring, but continued to be carried by the current until she met local residents Lu Fuchen and Wei Donggui, who managed to pull her out of the water.

The couple gave her a warm meal and a set of dry clean clothes as well as a strong suggestion not to swim whilst drunk.

On October 12, Mrs Shen went back to thank her rescuers and brought them woolen jumpers, shoes, and other presents to show her gratitude.
