Creative or Crazy? Inventions for Dealing with Spring Festival Travel

Japan may soon lose its status as the world leader in weird things, as a new batch of bizarre Chinese inventions, claiming to help make the long journey home over Spring Festival a little more comfortable, were recently revealed online. Check out some of the highlights below.

1) Sleeping/face rest pole thingy

Could this ingenious device soon be seen on subways across China? This sleeping aide has been a hot purchase on Taobao as of late for travellers who weren’t lucky enough to get a sleeper seat for their ride home. Upon setting up the device, you simply rest your face on the top while the middle part keeps your body in place. Judging by the expression of the guy in the cartoon, it’s a perfectly comfortable alternative to a bed.

2) Screaming chicken

Anyone travelling during Spring Festival will inevitably encounter large crowds, whether it be on the train, on the bus, or at the airport. We’ve all heard of thieves and other dodgy characters hanging around busy areas at this time, and this is the perfect solution to scare those jerks away. One squeeze, and it leads out a deafeningly high-pitched scream that is sure to make anyone doing anything they shouldn’t vacate in an instant.

3) Spiky shoes

If the chicken isn’t enough to scare those shady characters away, then these bad boys will surely suffice. One look at anyone wearing these shoes will be sure to put off any pickpocket or pervert, and one swift kick will ensure they wish they’d never tried.

4) Ostrich pillow

Named the “ostrich pillow”, this sleeping hat allows passengers to bury their head in the sand (metaphorically speaking) and shut off all light and sound in order to get some sleep.

5) Paper Mah-jong

Last but not least is this handy, disposable (and most importantly, quieter) mah-jong set. If you feel like sitting on a train for 24 hours isn’t “Chinese” enough, then you can be a true culture vulture and play some mah-jong while the train slowly makes its way to your destination.

Paper mahjong and screaming chickens are not that weird, especially the mahjong, Chinas favorite pastime. As it is, mahjong is quite similar to Jin rummy, a card game.
