On April 9, 34 year old Sichuanese bee keeper She Ping attempted to break the record for number of bees worn, by covering himself with nearly 460,000 bees all in the name of promoting his honey.

This may seem crazy but ‘bee bearding’ is a popular activity in the beekeeping world and fairly prominent in China, with one couple in Ning’an even getting married both entirely covered in bees in 2009.

For the ‘performance’ She Ping and his wife used roughly 28 bee hives, each hive containing about 20,000 bees.

To successfully bee beard you need to avoid washing for three days, stuff your nose and ears and avoid wearing cotton which will agitate the bees into stinging you.

Onlookers watched as She Ping took off his shirt and waited as the bees were slowly released from their boxes. They flocked to She Ping, gradually covering his body in a 45 kg ‘bee coat’. To attract the bees he wore 16 queen bees hung over his body.

Removing the bee coat is a quick but painful process, She Ping just shook his whole body and the bees dropped off within 2 seconds, revealing that he was covered in stings.

He didn’t break the world record (that’s held by Indian Vipin Seth who wore a staggering 61.4 kg of bees) but he is one of the first to do it shirtless.
