The following guide is part of a mini-series of travel articles that will be appearing in China Explorer Destinations to give those of you who own your own pair of wheels in the shape of a car or motorbike some ideas for short weekend breaks.

We start with the city of Guangzhou and three lesser known locations that with the use of your own transport, are easily accessible for those days when the city has just become too much and the weather tempts you outdoors.

1. Mt. Heng (衡山)

Heng Mountain is famous for being rainy in the spring, nice and cool in the summer and not too cold in the winter, with fog enveloping the mountain for 7 months of the year.

Mt. Heng has three major levels, each with beautiful views, and this also means that the climb is not too strenuous. The best time to make a trip to Hengshan has to be late summer to early autumn. Winter can bring some impressive snow scenes.

How to Get There:

From Guangzhou take the Jingzhu Express (京珠高速) for 400 km to Chenzhou (郴州). From there turn on to S322 190 Km to Hengshan.

2. Seafood at Weizhou (涠洲)

Weizhou is a small island that lies 21 nautical miles off the coast of Beihai, Guangxi. The island is only 24 sq. km in size.

This pristine island is not only home to some of the most secluded beaches in the South China Sea, but that it is also home to some of the most delicious seafood dishes known to man.

How to Get There:

Travel to Beihai via way of Foshan and Jiangmen following the main express way. Then take the ferry from Beihai port.

3. Lakes of Lingnan (岭南)

The area of China that is now known as Guangdong, was, for a long time, called Lingnan, or South of the Ling Mountain Range. Indeed, this beautiful mountain range forms a natural barrier between the PRD and the open plains of central China.

So, why not take advantage of this natural barrier and take yourself off to enjoy the stunning lake scenery of the Zhaoqing (肇庆) region? With over 600 sq. km of lake area and over 20 km of shady forests to stroll through, a day or two in Lingnan will not be a disappointment.

How to Get There:

Take the G321 100 km to Zhaoqing, then the S352 50 km, before turning onto the G324 160 km to Yulin (玉林).
