A City Surrounded by Trash: Sights Tourists Don't See in Beijing
Feb 05, 2010 By eChinacities.com

Beijing is a big city and expanding outwards daily. It’s hard to get accurate numbers on Beijing’s actual population, but you don’t need to be a scientist to realize that 10-20 million people generate a whole lot of trash. Relentless construction also produces a great deal of waste and it all needs to go somewhere. Photographer Wang Juliang traveled around Beijing documenting the waste dumps littered around the city, and the effect on the nearby residents. The following photos portray realities that few tourists, or even long-term Beijing residents, ever witness with their own eyes. Pictured here is a trash dump near a condominium

1) Liyuan Town in Tongzhou District , Beijing

Pictured here is a trash dump near a condominium. Streams of motorized three-wheeler vehicles make the trip here each day to dump trash. The trash is burned in the compound every two or three days – with the pungent smell lingering for days after. The unpleasant odor and the heavy smoke are what residents that live in the condominium a few hundred meters away wake up to each morning, day in and day out.

There is a river that runs through the dump. Trash is piled all along its bank, emitting putrid smells and polluting the water. Dairy cows from a nearby farm stroll to the trash-littered water to drink everyday, nibbling among the trash for things to eat.

2) Yonghezhuang in Fengtai District , Beijing

A landfill in the Fengtai district of Beijing. The area surrounding the landfill is bustling with all kinds of commercial centers, world-class parks and famous sightseeing areas. There are also roughly over 70,000 people living in apartment complexes and villages nearby. There are 16 other trash dumps just like this one, spread throughout Beijing, taking up large amounts of land and encroaching on the natural surroundings and effecting the lives of the people living nearby.

3) Construction Site for Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway

Pictured here are rubble and cement left at a construction site after the completion of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway a few years back. The construction site measures a total of 10,000 square meters, covered with cement as thick as 50 cm. Large amounts of land were left desolate and cemented solid after construction was completed; the intercity rail covers 100 km and there are many more abandoned sites just like this one all along the way.
