The most romantic day of the year was not all flowers and chocolate for a number of Chongqing couples. The Chongqing marriage registration office processed 549 divorces this past Valentines’ Day.

To be fair, February 14 was the first day of work after the Spring Festival holiday. Therefore, it was a busy day at the Chongqing office. 4,788 couples received their marriage registration this Valentines’ Day as well.

Staff said that the couples who filed for divorce probably did not realize that February 14 was “Western Valentines’ Day.” Chinese Valentines’ Day or Qixi Festival falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar. In 2016, the holiday will fall on August 9.

The number of divorces on February 14 is noteworthy because it is about twice the number usually processed daily by the office. Why did so many couples file for their divorce the first day after the Spring Festival? Time off means time spent together. During the Spring Festivals, couples have the time to re-examine their relationship and think about their lives.
