A hiking trip for 17 friends in Guangxi’s Changtan Nature Reserve on October 2 quickly turned into a nightmare after heavy rainfall hit the area. On October 5, one of the hikers texted his wife, asking her to contact a rescue team to help them get out.
A local government rescue organization team spent 51 hours trying to rescue the hikers, and in the end rescued 42 who were stranded in the area (25 more hikers were found trapped along the way in search of the 17). The 17 hikers were in an unauthorized area of the reserve, making them more difficult to find and rescue.
Jinxiu Yao Autonomous Country dispatched more than 100 police and firefighters and send more than 200 rescue workers, 40 doctors and nurses, and 300 logistics personnel. More than 80 rescue vehicles were deployed. The whole mission cost more than 100,000 Yuan, not including follow-up costs.
The 17 hikers were each fined 1,000 Yuan by the local government on October 14. Hikers found trespassing in unauthorized areas may be fined 100 to 5,000 Yuan according to relevant provisions.
