Chinese Man Asks U.S. Police How They Would Deal With Hong Kong Student Occupation

Chinese Man Asks U.S. Police How They Would Deal With Hong Kong Student Occupation
Oct 11, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Editor’s note: This opinion piece, translated from wenxuecity.com is a post by popular Chinese blogger 'Brother Cui’. His work is famous in China and throughout the Chinese diaspora and focuses on comparisons between Chinese society and America, where he has resided for nearly three decades.

This article presents Brother Cui’s own opinions and his response to Western media coverage of the Hong Kong student protests. He allegedly interviews a nameless US policeman and illustrates his thoughts with photographs of undetermined origins and times depicting police brutality in Britain and America; he then goes on to draw his own personal conclusions on the difference of behaviour between western and Hong Kong police when dealing with protestors.

Location: Fifth Avenue, New York.

Brother Cui: (to policeman) Officer, can I ask you one thing? If there were thousands of people in the United States out of the streets for several days, blocking traffic, how would you deal with it?

Police: Remove them by force, period. Remember how the police dealt with the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests?

Brother Cui: Of course I remember, I was in New York at the time. I remember at the time, police officers from eight different cities came to New York. They had armored vehicles, bullet proof vests, snipers, mounted police, and weapons like tasers, and stun guns.

Police: Do not forget, the police also carry live ammunition. If suspects resist arrest, we have the right to use force. If they have a weapon and there is a threat to the life of a policeman, they must shoot to kill.

During Occupy Wall Street, New York police warned students to evacuate

Brother Cui: But, the students on the street are very young. But, at the same time, they are in pursuit of democracy.

Police: Democracy is none of my damn business. My duty and job is to maintain an orderly and civilized society. Without order, democracy is a piece of shit.

Democratic police batons beat down democracy, because public order is most important.

After being dragged away by police, many Occupy Wall Street protesters brought their cases to the courts. However, any lawyer fees or losses had to come out of their own pockets

The police in the U.S. also use the same kind of pepper spray that was used in Hong Kong that riled students up so much against the autocratic forces

Brother Cui: But, the young people have been in the streets of Hong Kong for a long time. Their actions are not illegal, and some think that the protests are justified.

Police: This is because of the weakness of the Chinese police. When Hong Kong was under British jurisdiction, did the people dare take to the streets? I tell you, British police are not like the gentlemen you may imagine them to be. They would use batons and you would be badly beaten.

If you hinder public freedoms, you must pay the price

Look closely, this is an English police officer. Where have the gentlemanly police gone?

Brother Cui: The situation is now a deadlock. Do you have any suggestions for what to do next?

Police: We should look at what President Obama recently said- when there is a crisis in the world, the world should look to America. If he ordered it, the New York police could go to Hong Kong to maintain order and teach the students how to respect authority. By the way, what language do they speak in Hong Kong?

Brother Cui: They speak Cantonese. I do not understand it, however most people studied English in school and can speak English.

Police: I could not understand their English. By the way, do Chinese people have money? You should send them each year to American police training to learn about violent law enforcement.

Brother Cui: China has a special department dedicated to violent law enforcement called inspectors. Finally, I want to ask, do you have any suggestions for the Hong Kong police?

Police: If I were the governor of Hong Kong, I would ban the police from eating noodles, stuffed buns and gruel, this kind of thing. How could the police eat this and be strong enforcers? How could they qualify as a policeman?

Brother Cui’s Thoughts on the Issue:

A. Supports the Chinese democratic process, but opposes the students occupying the streets. Even in a democratic country like the United States, this kind of action is not tolerated.

B. I have been in the United States for 27 years, and have repeatedly witnessed violent police enforcement. I have also gone to jail, so I am qualified to introduce citizens to the truth about democracy. The photos are arranged in the article so that the public can draw their own conclusions about the situation. So, for those that call me wu mao (censor paid by the Chinese government) or call me other names, it is an honour to be cursed out by the type of people who share in this hatred of China.

C. The occupation in Hong Kong has caused the stock market to spiral, market paralysis, and pain and hatred. In a short time, this will spread. The north and the south will begin to argue. The people of Hong Kong will not obtain democracy, and their land will become similar to that of modern day Iraq. When the Chinese people fail, the Chinese people won’t be the ones who are laughing. You know what I mean. So, compatriots, please don’t be taken in. Our own country’s affairs are for us to discuss.

the article is right about one thing. the right to protest in the west has been curtailed since 9/11..and the police do take more aggressive action than they would have done in the past. but being British I would I have to mention that the picture of the British policeman, is fake, it is an American cop. I did think that the Chinese police reaction to the HK protests were about the same as would happen here in the uk

Twenty-seven years of ability to express any opinion and still a poodle for the CCP? Pathetic. Also, the supposed English (sic) police officer is wearing a uniform and cap not seen in the UK.

Obviously fake. "When Hong Kong was under British jurisdiction, did the people dare take to the streets?" I've never met any American who talks like that. Sounds like pathetic propaganda to me.

Fake stories and smear campaigns proped up by irrelevant cases while turning a blind eye to the differences in nature of the subject matter. They think they can still fool the world? lol

China needs to differentiate between rioting and protests. They probably think this apologist piece is a valid defensive argument, with cherrypicked, misrepresented picturtes of police brutality during protests that turned violent, with looting and rioting. Is there any looting or rioting taking place in HK now? No? Then it doesn't compare. And why does a website that claims to bring news translate the dribble posted by some glorified wumao "brother cui"? If I was willing to lie and obfuscate, I could post propaganda that was 10x better in quality, entertainment value, message potency, defendability and believability. Millions of braindead wumao reaching for excuses to validate the Party, and this is the cream of the crop? The best that China has to offer in propaganda? China is too pathetic for words.

This is so...so...so fake... police ": If I were the governor of Hong Kong, I would ban the police from eating noodles, stuffed buns and gruel, this kind of thing. How could the police eat this and be strong enforcers? How could they qualify as a policeman?" How does he know this is the food there...before living in China I had no idea that 粥 was eaten here...and so common...One minture the cop doesn't know anything about HK, ie that they speak Cantonese, the next minute he is an expert on the Chinese diet, and finally REMEMBERS British Police in HK? The HK police were Chinese even before the handover...

What exactly is the point of this article? There's police brutality in America and therefore police brutality in Hong Kong is okay? Mommy told me that two wrongs don't make a right.

LoL... Chinese really do have a limited number of tactics for dealing with situations don't they? Let's see... should we use the: - victim card? - nope - crazy logic/overly emotional card - nope - Everyone look at the U.S.! - yup Why do they always point the finger at the U.S. everytime as if that justifies anything that happens in China? Do they think the rest of the world condones the actions of the Americans at all times? Btw, this interview is about as real as a Chinese rolex.

" police officers from eight different cities came to New York" BS The NYC is a fucking army by itself. They would not need any help from the state police (that's where the extra help would come from) to deal with protests. Attention all morons, America is the worst example of Democracy.

I have not been to America but something about this article does not read right. It actually reads as as a piece used to justify possible hard line action in HK, so that when it happens the Chinese can say look western countries do this as well, we are no different. It speaks of the Chinese democratic process, could someone enlighten me as to the nature of that process because I fail to see it. If this person really has been in America for 27 years he should realise that there is far more allowance of peaceful protest than is allowed here. America is not perfect but is a hell of a lot closer to democracy than China is. Anyone who thinks that being able to vote for a political leader from a pre-selected group of Beijing kowtowers seriously needs to adjust their views.

The mainland beat police that I see are usually doing nothing at all. The traffic cops have only one function; blowing their whistles. And pulling their car to the edge of the intersection, kicking their seats back and sleeping. Two functions then.
