The Meat Challenge – Finding Good Steak in Wuhan

The Meat Challenge – Finding Good Steak in Wuhan

Let’s talk about something serious—no not politics or the mounting pollution problems plaguing Wuhan—food. There is one food that defines us as foreigners, that most of us crave more than a good burger and pizza: an awesome steak. There’s not much in comparison to a nicely seasoned and expertly prepared steak, no matter if it comes rare, medium rare, or well-done.

Finding a good steak in Wuhan isn’t easy. There are a lot of so-called ‘Western’ restaurants scattered throughout the city, but don’t be fooled by the beautiful menus or the promise of a true steak. Most of these places serve up Chinese style steaks, which tend to be thin and covered in black pepper sauce. The sauce is so thick and spicy that it manages to cover up the poor quality of the tasteless beef they serve. To a traditional Chinese who has never had the pleasure of eating a juicy steak they might not notice or care, but for a salivating foreigner out for blood, this simply will not do. Thankfully, there are some really great places to get a steak in Wuhan and if you’re not too stingy with your coin or willingness to travel, it can be yours.

1) Ban Qiu Shan (半秋山 formally known as 绿)View In Map

This is a great restaurant to visit while in Wuhan for a number of reasons. First, the environment is warm, friendly, and clean. The interior is dimly lit, which creates both a private and romantic atmosphere. They also include a smoking and non-smoking sections. The food selection is extensive, with the menu featuring Asian style dishes as well as Western. You’ll get your usual fair of pastas, salads, steaks, pizza, and curry and Asian style rice dishes. As far as steak goes, this restaurant’s juicy T-bone steak is one of the most popular items on the menu. Other famous dishes are the fruit salads and delicious pan pizzas. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly and polite. If you decide to go, be sure to book a reservation before the big rushes at lunch and dinner, because the wait can be long. There are a quite a few locations in Wuhan so find the one close to you and give it a whirl.

2) Goya (戈雅牛排法餐厅)

Goya proclaims, rather proudly, to be a French style restaurant. Having eaten in all sorts of places in Wuhan asserting themselves to be this, that, or the other, I took this title with a grain of proverbial salt and went inside. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. I thought it would have ho-hum service and be all style with little to no substance. Boy was I wrong. The interior is gorgeous, a sort of art-deco flavour with a modern twist. They have these little alcoves for private dining just off the main floor with beautiful and comfortable booth style seating. The entire place looks sort of like the mad-hater’s home from Alice in Wonderland, but more upscale and refined.

To boot, the food is pretty fantastic. They serve it in true French style in small, interesting dishes—the food small, but ornamental and exquisite. The dishes that come most highly recommended by patrons are the Madrid Beef, French snail soup, the filet mignon, and their garlic bread. Their desserts are pretty nice too, especially their cakes and caramel pumpkin pudding. Compared to the first restaurant on the list, this one is more expensive—but for the fine dining experience and a little taste of France, it’s well worth it.

Opening hours: 10:30-22:00

3) Renaissance Café (万丽咖啡厅)

Located in the beautiful Renaissance Hotel isn’t just a steak house, it’s an incredible and highly affordable buffet (98 RMB for lunch). Of course, they offer the usual buffet fair like salads, a wide assortment of desserts and side dishes, but where the Renaissance Café shines is their steaks, especially their rib eye. The environment of the buffet is also very modern and classy, which makes it a great place to go on a date, visit with friends, or take a business acquaintance.

Add: 2/F, Renaissance Hotel, Xudong Dajie, Wuchang District, Wuhan
Tel: 027 86621522
Opening hours: 6:00-23:00

As per usual, those listed above are just a small sample of steak restaurants in the Wuhan area, but there are many more worth mentioning. For example, Blue Sky Café (蓝色天空咖啡) gets much praise in the foreign community for its quality steaks. Located in Hankou, this café offers an exceptional menu of steaks and foreign foods, imported drafts, and a great atmosphere.

Some other places to check out would be Café Brussels, Giano’s Pizzeria, The Red Tea, Bistro98, and Japanese steak house Ozeki. It should be pointed out that Ozeki tends to be expensive—with the Australian beef costing a whopping 600 RMB. However, for those serious to have a scrumptious steak, they do come highly recommended.

So, if you want steak in Wuhan you can get it. Though Wuhan isn’t as modern as Shanghai or Beijing, and the number of foreign operated restaurants is limited—steak, a good steak at that, isn’t impossible to track down and devour. Happy hunting.
