For a great day trip, and an alternative Great Wall experience, a visit to Tianjin’s Huangyaguan Great Wall is the perfect option. Located some 126 km north of Tianjin in the northern part of Ji County, Huangyaguan Great Wall became one of Tianjin’s biggest treasures to protect in 1986.

This section of the Great Wall was first built in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-557AD) and reconstructed for the first time using bricks during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was then restored for the second time in 1985. All together, it winds through the mountains for 42 km on a mountain ridge, at an average altitude of 738 meters, with a total of 66 watch towers. The main watch tower to go see is the Phoenix Tower, also called the Baguaguan Castle. These are some of the most unique parts of the wall, and this part of the Great Wall incorporates the most different features. Even the nature in surrounding areas is beautiful, rife with natural springs and waterfalls.

The wall at Huangyaguan is rougher than other parts though, and steps are steep. To take on this part of the wall you must be in decent physical condition and it is important to note that unlike most parts of the Great Wall in Beijing, there are no cable cars here.

The bus leaves from Tianjin Heibei Passenger Depot to Jixian Passenger Depot, takes about three hours, and costs 35 RMB.

Where To Stay

Best place to visit if you want to avoid crowd. Went there at wintertime and actually no one was there except locals.

I'm thinking of going. Did you stay overnight? If so, where?

sorry for late reply. not coming online very often. No need to stay overnight. 1 day should be enough but keep the train schedule in mind because the last one left around 4-5 pm as i remember.
