Make Friends While Exercising: Sports Clubs in Nanjing

Make Friends While Exercising: Sports Clubs in Nanjing
By Tom Morse , eChinacities.com

Sports clubs are a great way to stay fit and meet some of the friendliest people in Nanjing. Most of them attract a number of Chinese and foreigners alike, and often host great social events. Nanjing also offers a variety of sports, including a few that you might not expect to find in China.

1) Ultimate Frisbee
This group meets at the track/football field of Nanjing Normal University, located just beyond the basketball courts. The group consists of anywhere from 12-20+ players, and welcomes people of all ability levels. They meet Fridays starting at 17:00, and Sundays starting at 16:30. The club also provides equipment and practices for occasional skirmishes against teams from around Jiangsu. Just bring yourself and clothes suitable for running; the club provides everything else. There are no fees.

The group also regularly holds social events, and trips for ultimate Frisbee matches in surrounding cities. Contact Simon for more details (see contact details below).

2) Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Nanjing’s first BJJ club just opened up at the end of the summer. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a popular martial art that focuses on grappling instead of striking. Their group only has a few experienced teachers, but they are eager to share Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with anyone willing to try. Their small space is located near Zhujiang Lu subway station. They meet Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 19:30-21:00. The cost is 30 RMB per session or you can choose from a variety of memberships.

3) Hash Harriers
Hashing is a combination of running or walking and drinking. Members follow directions along a route, where they are awarded with beer (or water). The run ends at a restaurant, where the socialising (and drinking) continues. Hashing is a great way to meet new people who enjoy both sports and nightlife. Nanjing Hash House Harriers meets for a monthly bout and is open to people of all ages and abilities.

If you’re interested in participating just send an email to NanjingHash@gmail.com.

4) Wutaishan Stadium
Wutaishan complex includes swimming, basketball, badminton and ping pong, which are all usually fairly busy. There is also a large stadium that occasionally hosts a practice range for the Wuwei Golf Club. If you go through the door on the right at the stadiums entrance and follow the red footsteps up to the second floor, you can find Nanjing’s only archery club. All of the sports require a small fee, but are open to the public. Some clubs offer instructions for those who are new to the sport.

5) Olympic Stadium
The Olympic Stadium was originally built to host China’s national sports competition, but will also serve as the location for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. It offers all of the standard sports, but is often cheaper and less crowded than Wutaishan Stadium, since it is located further from the city centre. However, it can easily be reached by either Line 1 or Line 2 of the Nanjing metro.

An ice-skating rink is located near the badminton courts in another building. While it could use some maintenance and new rental equipment, it does provide a fun afternoon for a reasonable price (60 RMB for two hours plus rentals).
