Weird Eats: Beijing's Strangest Theme Restaurants

Weird Eats: Beijing's Strangest Theme Restaurants

Beijing offers a wide array of culinary delights and dangers but if you are in the mood for something a little odd then you have come to the right place. Here are the six strangest themed restaurants Beijing has to offer.

1) Bian Bian Man Wu Fan Tang (便便满屋饭堂)View In Map
Perch on commodes and enjoy turd shaped ice-cream from bowls resembling toilets at this scatological eatery. Those wanting to avoid the excrement-like dishes can find more conventionally presented spaghetti, fried rice, and salads. A constant background of plastic pop from the likes of Lady Gaga struggles to raise the tone. The food might not be great quality, but the audacious theme is carried through without compromise, and the dishes are at least guaranteed to be tastier than the objects they imitate.

Add: 91 Dianmenwai Dajie, Xicheng District, Beijing
地址:北京市西城区地安门外大街91号
Tel: 010 84035296
Average price: 40 RMB/head
Recommended dishes: mashed potato, chocolate ice cream

2) The East is Red (红色经典主题餐厅)View In Map
The revolution might just turn out to be a dinner party after all, if this Cultural Revolution themed restaurant is anything to go by. Propaganda posters and images of the Great Helmsmen surround the thoroughly communal dining hall; while a gaudy dance shows recall the worst excesses of Maoist kitsch. A selection of hearty dishes, mostly drawn from China’s Northeast, are given retro-socialist titles including “Village chief sent down to the countryside” (apparently a vegetable dish). Like the socialist utopia itself, the restaurant can only be reached by way of a long march, this time to the east of Beijing's fifth ring road. Song and dance shows start around six in the evening, and booking ahead is encouraged.

Add: 266 Baijia Building, East of the 5th Ring, Chaoyang District, Beijing
地址:北京市朝阳区东五环外白家楼266号
Tel: 010 65748289, 65748290

Recommended dishes: Any of the “iron pot” dishes

3) Theresa Teng Music Theme Restaurant (邓丽君音乐主题餐厅)View In Map
Probably the most famous Chinese singer of all time finally gets her own theme restaurant, albeit in a far-flung eastern corner of Beijing. The restaurant contains furniture and other items once owned by the singer, as well as a piano she once played. There's a wide choice of Guangdong and Taiwanese dishes, but they don't come cheap, starting at around 60 RMB each. The restaurant opens at four each afternoon, so no chance of lunch either. No prizes for guessing what the background music is. Can a Jay Chou barbecue-joint be that far off?

Add: Building 2, Taiwan Lu, Shijingshan Lu, Shijingshan District, Beijing
地址:北京市石景山区石景山路2号北京台湾街B区2号楼
Tel: 010 68600005
Average price: 200 RMB/head
Recommended dishes: Theresa Teng's favourite, pig feet

4) Number 8 Hotpot (8号苑秘制火锅)View In Map
Serving up nostalgia for the post 80s generation, this hotpot joint is designed to resemble a 1990s era classroom – with blackboards, school chairs and desks complete with holes for the hotpot. Other inventive dishes, mostly on the sweet side are available. Guests have the chance to join in classroom style quizzes while they eat, and there's flag rising and national anthem singing on Mondays. Reservations are encouraged, and late arrivals are liable to be punished by the class monitor. Open for dinner only.

Add: 8 Xinjian Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing (east from Lingjing Hutong subway station)
地址:北京市西城区新建胡同甲8号 (灵境胡同东口南侧)
Tel: 010 66088880
Average price: 45 RMB/head
Recommended dishes: Fish Tofu, Sweet Bread

5) Feng Bo Zhuang (风波庄)View In Map
If you remember the noodle-house fight scene from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you'll have an idea what to expect when you walk into a branch of Feng Bo Zhuang. Everything here is kung-fu themed, with swords adorning the walls and dishes carrying vaguely-mystical names like “Nine Positive Feats''. Don't bother ordering: waiters will bring dishes to your table, and you have the option to send them back. With seven branches spread over Beijing, you won't need wushu flying skills to reach your nearest one in time.

Add: 44 Zhaodengyu Lu, Xicheng District, Beijing (south from Xinjiekou subway station)
地址:北京市西城区赵登禹路44号 (近新街口地铁站)
Tel: 010 66157458
Average price: 40 RMB/head
Recommended dishes: “Big Power Balls”

6) Trojan Fairy (木马童话黑暗餐厅)View In Map
Experience a meal in complete darkness at Beijing's only unlit restaurant. Customers choose their dishes, and hand over any possible light sources such as mobile phones and cameras, before entering the pitch-dark dining area. A waiter will guide you to your place, and help you feel out the position of your chair and table. The food is Western with a Chinese interpretation, with beef steaks, soups, cheese and salads. Money saved on lighting doesn't show up in prices: a set meal for one costs 199 RMB. But check the website for news on discounts, and pray you don't drop your fork.
