Located to the south of the Pearl River Delta, Zhuhai is the smallest prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province. Zhuhai borders Macau to the south, and overlooks Hong Kong across its eastern coast. Originally designed as one of the five members of Special Economic Zones, Zhuhai has also developed into one of China’s premier tourist destinations.
Home to 146 islands scattered in the vast expanse of the South China Sea, Zhuhai is nicknamed City of a Hundred Islands. Four-fifths of the city is surrounded by sea. Tourists flock in for its long coastlines, waving palm trees and open spaces.
Zhuhai is warm and humid throughout the year, with an annual average temperature of 21°Celcius. With rainy season lasting from May to October the best time to visit the city is March-April or October-December.
In contrast to neighboring Macau, life here is lived at a much slower pace, making it ideal for travelling. Here are some not-to-be-missed attractions in Zhuhai:
1) Statue of Fisher GirlView In Map
Facing the majestic Xianglu Bay, Statue of Fisher Girl (珠海渔女) is regarded as the signature artwork of Zhuhai. The 8.7 meters high statue was carved from a 10-ton granite stone by well-known Chinese sculptor Pan He. The fisher girl stands in a graceful posture, holding a shining pearl up in the air. Adorned with a beautiful necklace and draped in fishing nets, she carries a happy yet shy expression that suggests brightness and hope. In the autumn of 1982 Pan He fitted together all 70 parts to complete the statue. A symbol of romantic love, the statue quickly gained popularity throughout the country.
