It is summertime, and no time is better in Shenzhen than now for al fresco dining. There are two primary spots where expats like to go to eat, drink and relax outside – Coco Park and Shekou’s Sea World – but that doesn’t mean we can forget the OCT (Overseas Chinese Town) and Dameisha. Both can be a bit of a hike from the city center, but a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and go to the beach.
Coco Park, home to many fancy brand name stores, is one of the more posh parts of town. This area brings in a crowd, including quite a few festival goers. There are a variety of restaurants and bars in Coco Park that offer al fresco dining and drinking. It’s a fun neighborhood that draws a mix of patrons from the young to the middle aged, Western and Chinese. Here is a sampling of Coco Park’s al fresco dining options:
Gaucho Garden Grill in Coco Park is a fun place to eat a lot of meat Brazilian-style and have some beer. They have quite the outdoor setup, including an outdoor big screen to watch sports and other events. There are several Gaucho Garden Grills in Shenzhen. The Coco Park is very good, and this is coming from someone quite picky about their meat. Unfortunately, the Gaucho Garden Grill in Sea World is consistently panned by diners.

The Norway Place Oslo Restaurant & Bar is a happening spot. Their theme, as you no doubt divined from the name, is a Norwegian restaurant and bar serving fish and a variety of other seafood and drinks.

OCT (Overseas Chinese Town) is home to a variety of al fresco dining options. A few of the more noteworthy are:
The Galleon Restaurant & Bar is a large venue, with over 400 seats outside. The array of Spanish tapas, German specialties and homebrewed beer make it a popular destination. There is often a South American band playing live.

Dameisha is a great place to go to in the summertime to relax by the beach. The Capri Italian Restaurant at the Sheraton in Dameisha has fantastic views of the ocean and mountains. You can enjoy Italian, Japanese, seafood as well as cocktails and wine. At night they often have some type of entertainment as well. Be forewarned however that it is a bit pricey – 238 RMB per person plus an additional 15% surcharge.

Right behind Sea World is the Tasca Spanish Tapas Restaurant. This place definitely pulls of the Spanish ambience. They serve fresh fish, meats and vegetables along with their specialty paella. Sangria comes in nice earthenware jugs. They have a more secluded outside dining area, ideal for a romantic date or a more quiet dinner.

Don’t forget Mama’s Restaurant, which has become a local favorite amongst the Shekou expats. They have over 20 kinds of pizzas, and their Mediterranean food is a fusion of European and Arabic dishes. You can also quench your American thirst for hamburgers and fries with their half-pound burgers and “mountain of chips” French fries.
