Do you like DJs? Do you like to listen to dance music? Do you like electronic music or do you sometimes like to DJ yourself on an amateur basis? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you will find a club suiting your taste in Shenyang.
The club scene in Shenyang is rather diverse and home to many different kinds of clubs; some focusing exclusively on Chinese local customers while others try to attract a more eclectic audience. This article will help you to find out which club caters to whom and how well they do so.
Party 98 排队俱乐部View In Map
Party 98 is a medium sized club whose layout is rather peculiar. Upon entering, you’ll first find yourself in a small dance room which leads to a second main dance floor, both of which are well decorated and equipped.
The reason to start with this venue is that it is the only club in Shenyang that offers the possibility to practice being a DJ. Indeed the small dance floor comes with turntables which are available to non professional DJs. Some basic knowledge is required though, and all you have to do is ask for “Nico”, the manager of the club who speaks some English.
On the weekends this smaller room is filled with young foreign students. The main room boasts a much more indigenous atmosphere with local bands and DJs alternating on the stage. The club hires young westerners (usually Americans studying in Shenyang) to serve at the bar on weekends, which can be very convenient when it comes to ordering your favorite cocktail.

Club 97
Club 97 97号俱乐部View In Map
Located on the ground floor of the Liaoning Hotel (辽宁宾馆 liáoníng bīnguǎn) Club 97 offers three distinct atmospheres in three different spaces. The first space is the main dance floor where DJs play mostly pop music. The second space is home to a bar equipped with comfortable sofas, and the third is an outdoor patio. Opened in 2008 (97 referring to the address of the building), the club is located right on Zhong Shan Square, in the heart of the city center and within walking distance to many other clubs and restaurants.
The decoration is rather ostentatious and so are the prices, but this is what you can expect from an upscale club designed with style and refinement. The service is good, the staff speaks English, and they have a wide range of wine, champagnes and cocktails.
Occasionally they invite foreign DJs but do not expect to find the best house music in town in this venue; Club97 is more of a classy place convenient to relax and also for dancing to some popular recent and less recent Western music. The club can sometimes attract many people but usually not to the point where the place is filled with dancers until the wee hours of the morning.

Sunny Night Club
Sunny Night Club 午夜阳光View In Map
Very different from Club97, Sunny is at the moment the most popular club among the expat community in Shenyang. Sunny opens at 20:00 and the beginning of the evening is usually quiet, the right moment to enjoy a drink at one of the two bars.
The club is separated into two bars/ dance floors. The biggest room attracts mostly Chinese customers and features a stage show with Chinese singers and dancers. The second dance floor near the club entrance attracts mostly foreigners. From midnight onwards, several different DJs (sometimes foreign DJs) will entertain the partygoers. Expect big crowds especially on the weekends. If you like techno music and late-night dancing in Shenyang, then Sunny Night Club is the right spot for you.

Don't Tell Mama 告诉妈妈 View In Map
“Don’t tell Mama” has the largest dancehall in Shenyang. It has three floors and is usually crowded with young Chinese teenagers any evening of the week. After entering the club, hosts and hostesses will lead you to a table and take your order; you can watch the crowd dancing and spot the many differences with western nightclubs.
It is not a new nightclub and the decoration could be refreshed while the sound system is only in a slightly better shape. Many people go there to get drunk and to sometimes dabble with legal and less legal drugs. In 2009, the club was busted in a drug raid and was shut down for six months.
They have local Djs and MCs but do not expect an eclectic selection of music here, as it is often the same popular tunes of the moment played over and over again. Despite all its shortcomings “Don’t tell mama” is the place to be if you’re looking for a typical Chinese club, with popular Chinese pop music and very few foreigners around.

Hottown 荷东俱乐部 View In Map
Last but not least, club Hottown. This club is located within walking distance of Club 97 just across from the Zhong Shan Square (中山广场 zhōngshān guǎngchǎng). It is a large nightclub with a decent sound system and good laser/light effects; it also attracts a good mix of foreign and local customers.
It is similar to many clubs you find in major Chinese cities such as Beijing or Shanghai. Sometimes they host foreign DJs late at night playing techno and trance music. Unfortunately the majority of the staff can’t even speak basic English so bring your Chinese/English dictionary with you if you’re Mandarin isn’t up to scratch. As with many of these Chinese clubs, karaoke rooms can be found on the third floor.
