Exploring New Expat-friendly Bars in Shenyang

Sometimes it seems as if the bar scene for expats is incredibly limited. Although Shenyang is a big city with over 7 million people, the expat bar scene can seem incredibly small. It’s easy to get stuck in the same old bar rut; a scene that can get both old and expensive, with taxi cabs required to get from one far off destination to another.

However, there are alternatives; four bars: Cherry Bar, Shamrock Giggles and Buddha Bar; they provide both a change of scenery and a break on the bank – as the bars are located meters away from each other in Huanggu District.

1) Cherry BarView In Map
The Cherry bar has something of a small nightclub feel with flashing green, purple and pink lights flashing across the dark bar. The environment is cozy with customers seated around the bar in a large semicircle. In front of each seat is a Jenga game for customers to play. Apart from the games, there is constant dancing entertainment from the centre of the bar. The dancing switches from a sexy pole dancer clad in a plaid school girl uniform and thigh high leather boots, to an up-beat hip hop dancer. With the dancing and games, this bar is a perfect change of scenery for any expat.

Shamrock Bar

It’s not easy to find a good Irish bar in Shenyang. However, Shamrock offers its customers a little piece of Ireland. The downstairs is decorated with Irish four leaf clovers and signs advertising the famous Irish beer, Guinness. Upstairs, iconic drinking and musical remnants of Ireland are tacked all over the wall: Pictures of the famous Irish Temple Bar district and Irish musicians such as U2 and the Dubliners. The atmosphere is laid back and intimate with soft Irish music playing in the background and the food is excellent. With its authentic Irish atmosphere (its owner Kevin Brogran is from Ireland), Shamrock offers a rare chance for an e-pat to get a taste of the Emerald Isle in Shenyang.

Giggles

This aptly named bar feels like partying in a fun house. The decorations are eclectic: Upstairs there is a butterfly collection tacked to the wall and a white chandelier fixture with dustpans and shells hanging from it. This bar has a lot of open space upstairs, making it the perfect spot for those of us who want to get ‘jiggy-wit-it’. However, this shouldn’t be taken to exclude those who want to leave their dancing shoes at home; the upstairs also features a comfortable enclosed group space, draped in white curtains and perfect for a more intimate experience with friends. Giggles offers a little bit of everything, and whether your desire is to dance or hang out, they offer the best of both worlds—and in an incredibly eclectic environment.

4) Buddha BarView In Map
This is actually one of the better known expat bars in Shenyang. This beautiful bar has a strong Oriental flair to it: large paintings of engraved Buddha, delicate lotus flowers and sunbathing tigers decorate the walls. This well lit, opulently decorated bar, is a welcome change from the usual loud, smoky, dark Shenyang bar. With its rich decorations and laid back atmosphere, this is a wonderful place to come with friends for a change of scenery.

Yap, the Buddha is really cool bar. But The owner opened another Next to Kempinsky hotel in Sheng He (Xi Bin He Lu), its even better than the first one. The also do Happy hours, ladies night ( I think on Wednesday) and Open Micro on Tuesday.
As for the Giggles, I heard the place has been closed for a while now..pitty, the owner was really cool girl.
