If you ever get fed up of lying on Sanya’s terrific beaches, drinking freshly gathered coconut milk and topping up your tan (we highly doubt it!) and you start feeling peckish, then there’s a veritable smorgasbord of classy restaurants on offer. Obviously these will cost more than your average xiaofanguan (little restaurant) but if you feel like splashing out somewhere other than the sea, here are some great places to pick up some posh nosh.
Edo Japanese Restaurant
1) Sanya Marriot Resort Hotel: Edo Japanese Restaurant三亚万豪度假酒店 江户银日餐厅View In Map
A relative newcomer (it was established in October 2009), this restaurant has even received the “official” stamp of approval from the Sanya government and was selected as one of the most popular international gourmet restaurants in Sanya! Decked out in modest Edo-period Japanese style, it’s a pleasant and quiet place for up to 88 people to enjoy freshly made sushi, sashimi, and teppanyaki, prepared by trained Japanese chefs. There are also five private rooms available should you wish to hold your own party or function.
The restaurant runs under strict operating freshness guidelines, meaning that no matter how expensive or difficult to obtain, ingredients that have not been used within a certain time limit must be replaced, ensuring you the freshest sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki in Hainan!

2) Paulaner Brauhaus普拉那啤酒坊 View In Map
Found on the first floor of the Kempinski Hotel, the German atmosphere hits you when you spot the two huge Paulaner beer kegs on the way in. For any Paulaner fans, this beer house represents the holy land of German beer, and the quality of output is also strictly monitored: every month, ‘beer technicians’ fly from Germany to oversee the brewing process (beer is brewed instore) and check the quality of the final product. Yes, it does sound like the best job in the world. The beer is served in giant steins, also imported from Germany, so you gotta drink up quick if you don’t want warm beer!
Traditional Bavarian fodder is on offer, and anyone familiar with it can expect huge, hulking joints of schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) served with potato dumplings and gravy. Portions are enough to feed two, so don’t come here if you’re on a diet.
There’s an outdoor garden if you want to feel the breeze on your face; if not then you can enjoy the view of the sun, sea, sand and sky from the huge windows upstairs.

Ritz-Carlton Beach Restaurant
3) Ritz-Carlton Beach Restaurant金茂三亚丽思卡尔顿酒店 海边餐厅 View In Map
You can truly enjoy dining in style here… right on the beach! The restaurant situated is on the beach front and open on three sides so you can enjoy the sound of waves lapping against the shore, and panoramic views of the bay as you enjoy your exquisite meal. The best time to come and eat here is around 6pm as the sun is setting: not only does it provide a wonderfully romantic view, but at that time you are also spared the savage heat of the daytime sun. The resort has a pool and if you really want to crank up the extravagance, you can have your meal served poolside, as you swim, float or splash in the water.
One of the chefs here is Philippe, a French man who has won five gold medals at the Shanghai International Culinary Competition, so your steak will be in safe hands, plus they can cook it exactly to your preference.

Lakeside Garden Barbeque
4) Lakeside Garden Barbeque花园湖畔木排BBQView In Map
Isolated from the noise and bustle of the surrounding areas, the Lakeside Garden Barbeque is pretty much exactly that: an outdoor barbeque set in a garden next to a pool! It’s imperative that you book before going, because this place gets packed, especially on weekends, and if you just turn up you won’t get a seat and will go home with your tail between your legs and your stomach rumbling.
On offer are the usual bbq faves: seafood skewers, steak, chicken wings etc, and there are other charcoal barbeque stalls where you can pick up anything that takes your fancy. You will definitely not leave with an empty stomach (unless you forgot to book ahead).
