There used to be precious few places in Qingdao where Westerners could buy imported food. For those familiar with Jenny Lou’s in Beijing, for example, there was nothing comparable in Qingdao, and even finding staples like bread, milk and cheese could be difficult. Fortunately, for those of us pining for the flavors of home, things now seem to be on the up-and-up.

1) Jusco, Carrefour, etc…

Qingdao’s bigger, city centre supermarkets now tend to carry many of the same Western items, such as Italian-syle pastas and sauces, one or two brands of fresh milk, and some imported wines. Though there is a lot of overlap, each supermarket also stocks some different items. For example, Carrefour seems to be alone in stocking couscous, Hisense in stocking imported Cadbury’s chocolate bars, and a different selection of cheeses is available at every store. Each also has a bakery selling Western-style breads and pastries.

2) Leader and Lotte

In the Shilaoren area, the newer Leader and Lotte supermarkets now also make some imported food accessible to expat residents in the city’s Laoshan district. Several smaller Korean stores nearby – and those dotted elsewhere around the city – also tend to sell dairy products such as milk and cheese.

3)Silver Garden Grocery ShopView In Map

The little family-run grocery store in Silver Garden is chock-full of packaged and frozen American foodstuffs, some Indian ready-made meals and other international foods, many of which aren’t available elsewhere. It’s one of a few places you can find a Thanksgiving turkey and cranberry sauce, for instance. However, prices reflect the fact that stock is imported in relatively small quantities, so it’s easy to spend a lot on very little. Just around the corner in the same residential block, you’ll find an excellent French bakery where you can pick up some excellent, fresh bread – if you’re timing is lucky.

4) Metro Cash & CarryView In Map

Metro Cash & Carry has long been considered one of the best places for imported Western food, but now many of the products it carries are offered elsewhere in the city. It remains, however, a great place for buying bulk, as well as a good spot for wine and other more difficult-to-source items, such as fresh herbs.

5) DEFA German Butchery

The German, DEFA brand of sausages and hams are popular among Westerners in Qingdao. They can be found at their dedicated store in Eldo Gardens, a few of the major supermarkets and the Crowne Plaza’s second floor deli.
