Ningbo is famous for its textile manufacturing, with many factories producing high-quality, inexpensive goods here, mainly for export. As one of China’s main garment manufacturing hubs, you can be sure to find plenty of decent clothing at very low prices. Exploring Ningbo’s markets is always an excellent way of picking up goods at bargain prices. However, Ningbo has more to offer than just clothing markets. Below is a guide to some of the best markets around the city, where you can expect to find anything from antiques, shoes, accessories, souvenirs and knick knacks.
Chenghuang Temple Market 城隍庙市场
Nowadays the only sacred thing about Chenghuang Temple is the great selection of cheap clothing that is sold here. People flock here in hordes just like devout sinners run to Church every Sunday. Located in the bustling heart of the city, Chenghuang Temple Market is where most locals go to buy cheap clothes and accessories. The building itself was indeed a temple originally, built way back in 1347. But if the gods saw the shopping fervor that goes on here especially at weekends they’d be rolling round in the clouds (or wherever they hang out). The market is spread over four floors, with one shop after another lining the corridors. Though this market is hands down the best place to find cheap clothes, many foreigners complain that they can’t find clothes in their sizes. However, since China is a country whose urban waistline is expanding this “problem” may just resolve itself by the time you read this. Finally, though the goods at this market are cheaper than at any department store, make sure you haggle down the price as much as you can.

Ningbo Fanzhai Antique Market 宁波范宅古玩集市
Ningbo Antique Market is housed in a traditional Chinese style building. Unlike many other typical markets around China, this one is organised neatly into individual shops within the building. You’ll find shops selling pottery, vases, paintings and scrolls, jewelry, Chairman Mao memorabilia, calligraphy, woodwork and carvings. Some of the more interesting items can be found outside the market where sellers lay out their goods on blankets on the ground. However, be vigilant about fake goods and always be skeptical.

Ningbo Gulou Market 宁波鼓楼步行街
Gulou Market is a pedestrianised market area around one of Ningbo’s most famous landmark buildings—the Ningbo Clock Tower. Originally, the area served as the south gate of the city during the Tang and Song Dynasty, but in modern times has turned into a commercial area just like the Chenghuang Temple Market. The Gulou market area is lined with over 400 individual stores spread over an area of 36,000 square metres, selling anything from women’s clothing, shoes and accessories to CDs, sports equipment, wood carvings and glass sculptures.
