Jilin Woman’s Home “Accidently” Demolished in the Middle of the Night

The owner of an uninhabited one-story house in Shulan City, Jilin Province recently faced what is surely every home owner’s worst nightmare: seeing your home demolished to a pile of rubble without any previous warning or consent.

On August 28, Zhang Jing received a phone call from her neighbor to say that her house on Nancheng Street was demolished. It was only after she went to the local police station that she found out that developers had accidently torn down the wrong house, or so they claimed.

Zheng Jing bought the house in 1996, but apart from the odd visit by her father-in-law, the property stood empty the entire time. In 2012 the area was listed for demolition and re-development. However, she was not happy with the compensation offered and refused to sign a contract. Within the year, most people in the area moved away and only she and around ten others refused to comply.

After receiving the phone call from her neighbor, Zhang Jing rushed to the site of her house. All that was left was pile of rubble. She also lost around 20,000 RMB worth of personal assets that were in the house prior to demolition. Furious she rushed to the police station only to be told by a police officer that the company had already reported the case to the police, claiming that they mixed up houses and didn’t mean to demolish Ms. Zhang’s house. Curiously, the demolition took place at around 04:00.

Zhang Jing refutes the claims, arguing that the developers know the area very well and are just making excuses. What’s even more horrifying and hard to grasp is the fact that Zhang Jing was told that the actions of the developers and workers does not constitute a criminal offense and that all the police can do is mediate between both sides.

What, so tearing down other people’s property is legal?

Lack of accessible justice system for the common folks with police working for the State only, leaves individuals to the perils of the powerful. Sad indeed.
