Zhuhai Business Guide - Economic Overview
Zhuhai, a relatively new city set up in 1979, is situated in the southern part of Guangdong Province about 140 km away from Guangzhou and stands on the western bank of the Pearl River estuary, adjacent to the South China Sea, bordering Hong Kong and Shenzhen to the east and Macao to the south. Zhuhai is famous for its hundred-plus islands and for being one of the first Special Economic Zones in China. Zhuhai has been empowered to effect local legislation by the National People's Congress.

Zhuhai has been honored with many titles by the State Government, including the National Forest City Award and the National Model Environmental Protection City Award, as well as the titles of Hygienic City and Outstanding Chinese Tourism City. In a competition hosted by the media to select the city with the most outstanding features among all the large and medium-sized cities in China, Zhuhai won the title of Most Romantic City. In 1998, Zhuhai won the Dubai International Award for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment. Zhuhai has become known throughout the world as an ideal city for its living environment. At the same time, it is also a city with a very high degree of openness, making it ideal for investment also.

Important events such as the Zhuhai International Aviation and Aerospace Fair and the Zhuhai International Car Race are attracting more and more domestic and foreign friends and investors. Zhuhai has become a beautiful modern seaside city with a booming economy and stable social order and has shown its enormous potential.

Based on international and domestic development trends and Zhuhai's actual situation, the Zhuhai Municipal Party Committee and Government are pushing forward a new-style industrialization, optimizing economic structures and strengthening the industrial base.

The city realized GDP of 74.96 billion RMB in 2006, up by 16.1% from the previous year. GDP per capita was 52,317 RMB, equal to US$6,539 and maintaining its third place ranking in Guangdong Province.

Economic Contribution Ratios by Sector
In 2006, the economic contribution ratio of the primary industries including agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and the fisheries, represented 2.7% of GDP; the economic contribution ratio of the secondary and value-added industries and construction represented 55.4%; while the economic contribution ratio of the tertiary sector represented 41.9%.

Foreign Trade Overview
Zhuhai has established trade relationships with 140 countries and regions. In 2003, the city hosted the first World Economic Development Declaration Conference. In 2006, Zhuhai had import and export volume of US$32.82 billion, including US$14.84 billion in exports and US$17.98 billion in imports. The value of general trade exports was US$2.51 billion; that of processing trade exports US$11.71 billion; that of electromechanical products exports US$11.95 billion; that of new-high tech product exports US$6.05 billion. Exports of foreign-invested enterprises were US$12.38 billion USD; that of domestic-invested enterprises US$2.46 billion.

The main destinations for Zhuhai's exports are Europe, North America and Australia. The top ten export destinations are shown in below. Exported products are mainly spare parts of automatic data processing equipment, game machines, cameras, clothes and telephones.
