On Monday, November 19, Liang Yonglan, a female farmer from earthquake stricken Yilian County in Yunnan Province, was arrested for previously kneeling in front of Wen Jiabao’s car when he visited the region in September. Reports at the time stated that Liang and a number of other local farmers had kneeled in front of Wen’s car, prompting him to get out of his vehicle to talk to them. The farmers requested more government compensation for their land and Wen had apparently told them that he would ask officials to look into the matter. Directly following the September incident, Liang Yonglan was set to be fined and detained for seven days. It is currently unknown why the police waited over two months to make the arrest. Word of her arrest on November 19 quickly spread, causing uproar in China and leading to strict censorship on microblogging sites like Sina Weibo. According to recent reports, she was released on November 20 after paying a fine of 1,000 RMB.
