Xining Entertainment Overview

Visitors may find the nightlife in Xining limited, but there are several venues worth checking out. Central to the nightlife in Xining is Qinghai Hotel, which boasts a ''Disco club'' as well as several places to eat. The Guotai Club (Wenhua Road; No.1 bus) is also a good place to visit on your hunt for a party, as is the Furonghua International Recreation Center (No.58, Shengli Lu) which opened in 2005, and bills itself as a ''slow-dancing bar'' (take from that what you will!). Those preferring their nightlife to have a more traditional flavor should make their way to Xinning and Central Square, where local people perform dances and sing every night.

People-watching is a very rewarding way to pass a quiet moment in Xining. The side streets provide visitors with dozens of cafes from where one can watch the people of the city go about their day. Region Coffee on Changjiang Lu and Lanshan Coffee House are popular, as are Mingshi Coffee Language and U.B.C. Most coffee houses stay open late & are an excellent alternative for visitors looking for non-alcoholic refreshment after dark.

Anyone aiming to re-energise after a long day sightseeing should head up to the Qinghai Hotel in the center of Xining, where a sauna, beauty salon, gymnasium and rooftop garden will provide some much needed rest & relaxation. Movie buffs can catch both Chinese and western movies at the Qinghai Theater, the Renmin Theater and the Xining Cinema.

Many visitors find that the most engaging form of entertainment in Xining is the calendar of festivals held regularly throughout the year. Participation is not confined to locals: visitors may learn and experience a great deal of the local ethnic folk culture through these celebrations, most of which are held in and around the Ta'er Monastery.
