Xi’an Archaeologists Discover Tang Dynasty “Public Cemetery”
Mar 06, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Archaeologists in Xi’an have recently discovered a 1,300 year-old Tang Dynasty “public cemetery” where the bodies of palace maids are believed to be buried. At present, archaeologists have found ten tombs, each approximately 3.5-4.5 meters long and 3.5-4.0 meters deep. The shape of these tombs is said to be very simple, somewhat resembling the shape of a knife. An epitaph of a 70 year-old palace maid was found on one of the tombs, detailing the maids’ titles and the burial procedures needed to be taken after their deaths, based on their rank in society.
