After being suspended for more than a year and a half, the controversial Xiamen PX project is expected to relocate to Gulei Peninsula, about 50 miles southwest of Xiamen on the Taiwan Strait.

Construction of the chemical plant, planned by Tenglong Aromatic PX (Xiamen), began in 2007 on a 300-acre tract on Haicang, an industrial and residential island just off Xiamen. But work was halted in June after a massive mobile phone message campaign by environmentalists who invoked the city's reputation for sweet air and beautiful surroundings.

The total investment of the PX project has rise from the formerly 10.8 billion CNY to 13.8 billion CNY. As for the most concerned environmental impact, the city is quite confident in pollution control of the project, according to the Zhangzhou ministry of environmental protection.
