Economic Overview

Xiamen boasts one of the most vibrant economies on the southeast coast of China and is one of the most competitive cities in the country. A beautiful "seaside garden" city, Xiamen has a booming tourism industry and is orienting itself towards attracting new visitors through eco-tourism. Located opposite Taiwan, the city is also a logical mainland center for Taiwanese sightseers and holiday-goers and offers visitors a complete tourist-friendly infrastructure and a broad array of recreational facilities.

In recent years, Xiamen's economy has experienced a sustained period of rapid economic development, greatly enhancing the city's domestic and international reputation. In 2006, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the city reached 116.24 billion RMB, an increase of 16.7% over the previous year. This incredible growth rate ranks first among the mainland's 15 sub-provincial cities, which include, besides Xiamen itself a very competitive list: Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian, Jinan, Qingdao, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Chengdu and Xian; virtually a who's who of fast-rising economic centers in China. The city's 2006 GDP per capita reached 49,887 RMB, with a total investment in fixed assets of 66.21 billion RMB.

All in all, Xiamen is one of the best cities for living in China. With eye-catching coastal beauty, it is frequently visited by international cruise ships. The city has also won a number of national and international honors such as the 1997 National Model City for Environment Protection, the 2002 International Garden City Award, the 2004 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor Award, the 2005 National Sanitary City Award and China's 2005 Top Ten Livable Cities Award, to name a few.

Foreign Trade and Cultural Ties
Xiamen established its first "twin" city with Cardiff in the United Kingdom back in 1983. Since that time, Xiamen has established sister-city relations with 11 cities in 11 different countries around the globe including Baltimore, in the United States and Sasebo in Japan.

The government organizes a number of conferences and invites a number of foreign trade delegations every year to promote foreign investment in Xiamen. The city also plays host to one of China's "Big Three" trade fairs; the China International Fair for Investment and Trade. Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and organized by the Fujian Provincial Government and the Xiamen Municipal Government, the fair is held annually from September 8 to September 11 in Xiamen.
