Wuhan Shopping Areas

Hanzheng Jie 汉正街
In 2000, municipal authorities transformed Hanzheng Jie into a tourist shopping paradise. Dazzling shops and stores housed in traditional buildings sell a wide array of handicrafts, gadgets and other merchandise. As the largest wholesale distribution marketplace in China, tourists flock to Hanzheng Street to get a piece of the bulk-price action.

Sitting south of the Hangshui River and east of the Yangtze, Hanzhengjie is the main boulevard in Old Hankou Town. Because its location between major shipping lanes makes transporting goods particularly convenient, the street has been booming with commercial activity for over 500 years.

Today’s Hanzhengjie occupies 2.56 square kilometers, has developed into the biggest small-commodities wholesale market in central China and has been nationally heralded as “the First Street in the World”. Most of the businesses on Hanzheng Street are small- to medium-sized private enterprises that deal in clothing, adornments, toys, hardware, zippers & other clothing accessories, indoor products, household appliances, shoes, craftwork, cosmetics and the like.

Jianghan Road 江汉路
100-year-old Jinghan Road lies in downtown Hankou. In September, 2000, the 1,210-meter street was unveiled as a shopping strip geared towards both tourists and residents.  177 meters longer than Shanghai’s renowned Nanjing Road, Jianhan Road is lined with over 200 stores and boutiques housed in traditional painted buildings.  Shops peddle a selection of merchandise that ranges from food and appliances to clothes, accessories and other luxury gods.

In any of five public squares arranged at intervals along the strip are numerous cafes and bars.  Items of historical interest are plentiful, as the street is lined with statues and buildings that once contained ancient banks and stores.
The street’s every detail contributes to a larger picture of its history, told and retold in the eyes of visitors. Amenities such as pay phones, mailboxes and car parking are available for your convenience.
