Linfen city of Shanxi province is rich in coal and thus has its fair share of coal mines; it also said to be one of the most polluted cities in China. According to a survey done by an environmental protection organization, the air pollution in Linfen is very severe. How severe? If a local resident would hang a white shirt out to dry, by the time he took it in, the shirt would have turned black from the soot in the air. Because of the sever air pollution, with each breath of air, local residents are taking in enough toxins equivalent to 3 packs of cigarettes. Major pollutants in Linfen are caused from coal mining, car exhausts and factory wastes.

The other 8 places listed among the World's 9 Most Polluted Places are Los Angeles in the US, Niger Delta of Nigeria, Greater London of UK, Greater Phoenix of US, Bandung of Indonesia, La Oroya of Peru and Dzerzhinsk of Russia.

Tapwater

So, I did a little research and found that if you measure just by air pollution you get a different story of the most polluted places. Now, mind you that this doesn't tell about trash and water pollution, but arguably how do you add together different types of pollution in the first place?
Anyway, if we just measure Air Pollution, the WHO did a study in 2010 that gives the following for most polluted cities:
