AustCham Shanghai is proud to present a panel discussion and luncheon highlighting the remarkable achievements of business women in Shanghai. The panellists will discuss a number of topics, including the challenges of setting up a business in China, branching out on your own and riding the downturn.

Colleen Ryan, China Correspondent of the Australian Financial Review (AFR)
Chair

Colleen's distinguished media career includes stints as editor of the AFR (1998-2002) and Washington correspondent of the newspaper (1996-1998). She is the winner of numerous awards including the Gold Walkley Award for Journalism (2004), the Walkley Award for Best Business Report (2004), the Centenary Medal for Services to Journalism and Publishing (2003), and Australian Journalist of the Year (1992).

Shi Bisset, Founding Associate and Group President of Shi Bisset and Associates

Before founding Shi Bisset and Associates, Shi was BASF & Virgin Atlantic Airway’s principal Organisational Development consultant in Japan & China respectively. Since her return to Shanghai in September 2004, Shi has set up the Organisation/Team Development & Executive Coaching arm of her own company which develops customized programmes for blue-chip Chinese companies and multi-nationals in the Asia-Pacific region (branches and representation in 80 countries). Shi is on the Leadership Faculty (which includes designing programmes) for Avon, Gesieke & Devrient, BASF, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Colin Buchanan & Partners and serves as a long-term Organisation Development partner for over 50 multi-nationals globally.

Joanne Wood, Chairman of Capital Eight

Joanne is the founder and senior partner in Capital Eight, an investment banking boutique specialized in corporate finance and headquartered in Shanghai. Prior to establishing Capital Eight. Joanne first came to China in 1982 as part of an Australia-China bi-lateral exchange scheme to study Mandarin but switched to a career in finance, remaining in Beijing to work with Chemical Bank. Post her MBA from London Business School, Joanne joined UBS with positions in New York, Zurich and London before returning to Hong Kong to join Jardine Fleming as a director, responsible for the development of the China M&A practice.

Jackie Yun, General Manager at Wagas

Educated in Sydney, Jackie began her career in the hospitality industry in 1995 at the age of 21 in a small café-juice bar. Twelve months later Jackie bought that café and operated her first business for 4 years before moving to Shanghai to study Chinese. In September 2001, fate and good fortune brought Jackie and John Christensen, founder of Wagas together. Several coffees later, Jackie joined Wagas as Manager in December 2001. John and Jackie became business partners and registered a wholly foreign owned company, Wagas Shanghai Ltd. Today Jackie is the General Manager heading up a team of 360 employees. The company comprises of 13 Wagas cafes, restaurant “roomtwentyeight” and 2 “Bistrow by wagas” restaurants.
