Sainkho Namchylak, a singer from Tuva (southern Siberia) who has lived in exile in Vienna for many years, will enchant audiences in Chongqing with her unique throat singing on October 13. After expulsion from a music college in Tulva due to treading on “male vocal territory” and completing her studies in Moscow, Namchyak gradually gained recognition for her vocal talent, especially in the 1990s, when she took her fusion of traditional throat singing and modern improvisation on a world tour. Audiences have been astounded by the diversity of sounds Sainkho can produce with her voice, from operatic soprano to birdlike squawks, from childlike pleas to soulful crooning.
