If you drive east about 50 km from Tianjin to the spot where the Hai River flows into the sea, you will see a large construction site with the sign “China Yujiabao, World Commercial District”. At the site, thousands of construction workers and engineers are working day and night on a project that, after 10 years, is slated to become the largest commercial district in the world. The commercial district will include a total of 120 projects, including exhibition and conference centers, education and training facilities, commercial space and residences, and other facilities catering to modern and traditional commerce needs. It will serve as a large base for conducting business for more than 400,000 industry elites.

The investment budget for this major municipal project located in the center of Tianjin’s Binhai New Area stands at around 200 billion RMB (29.5 billion USD). Yujiabao Commercial District is to constitute a major part of the Binhai New Area’s commercial development, and spans 3.86 square kilometers, with a total building area of 9.5 million square meters. The 120 projects and will be separated into four construction phases. Ground was broken on the Yujiabao Commercial District in 2009, and full construction is scheduled for the next 3 years. It is expected it will take five years for the commercial district to take shape, and that construction will be completed in the next ten.
