Three Sentenced to Death for Tiananmen Square Attack
Jun 16, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Three people have been sentenced to death for the attack on Tiananmen Square last October that killed 5 and injured 40. The suspects were arrested after they drove a car into a crowd in the historic square, killing three passengers and two bystanders.

According to reports by state media, the suspects had been plotting the attack since 2011, when they came to Beijing and began acquiring firearms and explosives. The car used in the attack was purchased with funds raised by their supporters.

The trial took place in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang and was televised by CCTV. One other member of the group was given a life sentence, whilst four more were given sentences from 5-20 years for joining a terrorists group and endangering public security.

The attack last year could be seen as heralding a new period of unrest in China, as attacks attributed to separatists have been continuing steadily over the past months.
